Animal Kingdom Trivia: Nature Facts That Sound Impossible

The animal kingdom is a quiz-master's dream: strange, wonderful and full of facts that sound impossible. Here is a collection to sharpen your nature round — each with a short explanation, because knowing why an animal is the way it is makes the fact far easier to remember.

Land Animals

The African bush elephant is the largest land animal. Large males can weigh around six tonnes. Elephants are also one of the few mammals that cannot jump.
A giraffe has the same number of neck bones as you — seven. Each one is simply enormous, up to 25 centimetres long.
Sloths move so slowly that algae grows on their fur. The green tint helps camouflage them in the rainforest canopy.
The cheetah is the fastest land animal, sprinting at around 100 km/h — but only for short bursts before it overheats.
Owls cannot move their eyes, so they turn their heads instead — up to about 270 degrees.
Wombats produce cube-shaped droppings. The shape comes from how their intestines contract, and helps the droppings stay put as territory markers.
The platypus lays eggs — one of only a few mammals that do. Males also have a venomous spur on their back legs.

A favourite quiz topic. Many date back to medieval hunting books:

Sea Life

The blue whale is the largest animal ever known to have lived — up to about 30 metres long, bigger than any dinosaur discovered so far. Its heart alone is the size of a small car.
Octopuses have three hearts and blue blood. Their blood uses copper rather than iron to carry oxygen.
Sharks are older than trees. They appear in the fossil record more than 400 million years ago.
Starfish are not fish. Scientists prefer "sea stars". They can regrow lost arms, and some species can regrow a whole body from a single arm.
Dolphins sleep with half their brain at a time, so they can keep swimming and come up for air.
Sea otters hold hands while they sleep so they do not drift apart.

Birds and Insects

The ostrich is the largest living bird and lays the largest eggs. It cannot fly, but it can run at around 70 km/h.
Hummingbirds can fly backwards, and some species beat their wings more than 50 times a second.
Flamingos are pink because of their food. Pigments in the algae and shrimp they eat colour their feathers. Without them, they would fade to white.
Honeybees communicate with a "waggle dance" that tells other bees the direction and distance of food. Karl von Frisch shared a Nobel Prize in 1973 for decoding it.
The peregrine falcon is the fastest animal on Earth, diving at more than 300 km/h.

Champions of Survival

Tardigrades, or "water bears", are tiny animals that can survive extreme cold, heat, radiation and even the vacuum of space by drying out and shutting down.
Axolotls, Mexican salamanders, can regrow lost limbs and even parts of their heart and brain.
A cow does not have four stomachs. It has one stomach divided into four compartments, which helps it digest tough grass.

Animal facts are easiest to remember when they surprise you. Pair each one with a mental picture — a whale bigger than a dinosaur, an owl turning its head almost all the way round, sea otters holding hands — and it will stay with you for years.
