Your Brain Is Lying to You (And It Is Doing You a Favour)
The brain is the only object in the known universe that tries to explain itself, and it is not an unbiased narrator. Most of what people believe about it is either outdated or was never true.
The ten percent myth
You do not use ten percent of your brain. The claim has no clear origin and no evidence behind it — brain imaging shows activity across essentially the whole organ over the course of a day, and there is no dormant ninety percent waiting to be unlocked. The brain is also metabolically expensive: roughly two percent of your body weight consuming about twenty percent of your energy. Evolution does not fund that kind of overhead for unused hardware.
The related "left brain is logical, right brain is creative" split is equally soft. The hemispheres do specialise — language processing leans left in most people — but every interesting task recruits both, and nobody has a personality determined by a dominant side.
Memory is a reconstruction, not a recording
Remembering feels like replaying a file. It is closer to rebuilding a structure from notes, and the notes get edited every time. Each act of recall can subtly alter the memory, which means your most-told stories are often your least accurate ones.
This is why confident eyewitnesses can be badly wrong, and why leading questions change what people "remember" seeing. The brain is optimising for a useful gist rather than a faithful archive — good for surviving, awkward for testimony.
Seeing is mostly predicting
Every eye has a blind spot where the optic nerve leaves the retina. You never notice it, because the brain fills the gap with its best guess at what should be there. Much of vision works this way: the brain builds a model of the scene and uses incoming light to correct it, rather than assembling the picture from scratch.
That is also why optical illusions work. They are not failures of the eye — they are the prediction machinery being shown input it was not built for, and getting confidently caught out.
The parts that surprise people
- The brain itself has no pain receptors. It registers pain everywhere else but cannot feel injury to itself, which is why some brain surgery is performed on conscious patients.
- The old rule that adults grow no new neurons has softened considerably — the hippocampus, a region central to memory, appears to be an exception.
- Sleep is not downtime. It is when the brain consolidates memory and clears metabolic waste, which is a large part of why a missed night feels like a broken machine.
The honest summary: the brain is less like a computer and more like an extremely good, slightly overconfident storyteller. Most quiz questions about it are really questions about which story we stopped checking.
